The Worth of Water
INTRODUCTION Thomas fuller once said "We never know the worth of water till the well is dry." Well our world came not to the sense of valuing the importance of water, which out of it everything lives, and without it everything dies. We do not believe passively by dismissing people's misusage and spoilage of water as another norm of human nature.
Earth
- Water covers 71% of Earth
- 2.5% of that it is fresh.
- Only One third 1/3 of that fresh water is available. (>1%)
The global is population About 7 billion
*By 2040-2050 it will increase to
9 Billion.
Water Uses
- WORLD WIDE….
- Over the past 40 years the world’s population has doubled and use of water has quadrupled.
- 1.2 billion lack access to water.
- 2.8 billion lack sanitation.
- Globally we use 70% of our water sources for agriculture and irrigation, and only 10% on domestic uses.
- While it takes about 12 gallons per day to sustain a human, the average American uses about 158 gallons.
- *A 5 minute shower takes 20 gallons of water.
- *Flushing a toilet takes about 3-4 gallons.
Water Crisis related Deaths.
- About 88% of diarrhea-associated deaths are attributable to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and insufficient hygiene.
- A child dies from water related disease every 21 seconds.
- An estimated 4,100 children under 5 die each day from diarrhea, globally.
- Around 1.5 million deaths Annually.
Social Issues
- More than one-third of Africa’s population lacks access to safe drinking water.
- 25-33% of Chinese do not have access to safe drinking water.
- In the US, thermoelectric power plants account for nearly 50% of all freshwater withdrawals.
- Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest number of water-stressed countries of any region
- Half of the global population lives in countries where water tables are rapidly falling.
Potential Conflicts
- By the year 2040 there will not be enough water in the world to quench the thirst of the world population and keep the current energy and power solutions.
- By 2050, 1 in 5 developing countries will face water shortages.
- The global middle class will surge from 1.8 to 4.9 billion by 2040, which will result in a significant increase in freshwater consumption.
- By 2035, the world’s energy consumption will increase by 35%, which in turn will increase water use by 15%.
- There will be about 1 billion more mouths to feed worldwide by 2025 and global agriculture alone will require another 1 trillion cubic meters of water per year
- Compared to today, five times as much land is likely to be under extreme drought by 2050.
World’s Views
![]() |
United Nations |
- Ban Ki-Moon
- Pointed out in his speech in 2010 the time the United Nations recognized access to clean water is a basic human right, he said….
- “More people die from unsafe water than from all forms of violence including war.”
The Solution
- According to many researches and economists including The UN for water home page, it will not cost more than 3 Trillion dollars to reconstruct, fix, and provide access for everyone world wide fresh and clean water.
Flint Michigan’s controversy.
- Flint Michigan has been facing water Crisis since 2014,
- People there are suffering from toxic water contaminated with lead, which runs through all their water pipes.
- There was and there still a controversy and debate between the conservative Republicans and Democrats over spending only $80 Million Dollars, to reconstruct those contaminated pipes.
Other controversies and U.S. expenses
- The United States government spent about..
- $718 Billion on defense and international security assistance in 2011.
- And $567 Billion in 2015.
- 6 Trillion Dollars 2003-2014 on the wars of Afghanistan And Iraq. *According to the federal reserves reviews.
Philosophical Views
- This problem is for the most part damaging and effecting the poor societies around the world. The world where we have the largest gap in history between the rich and the poor.
- Where the wealthiest 85 individuals in the world have more money than the next 3.5 billion people combined.
- Where the motivation for benefits like oil and gold have attracted governmental regimes to fight some of the bloodiest wars in history exterminating and killing innocent civilians.
The Worth of Water
The time the U.S. Spent 6 Trillion Dollars on the wars of Afghanistan And
Iraq, it treated the problem of Flint's water as a controversy to not spend 80
Million Dollars.
- Water is indeed a human right. Water is generally a public service and by all means a common good, which cannot be left out in the market where it's an advantage people take over, nor can it be left plainly unregulated and used, or carelessly spoiled.
25.00
- Water cannot be liberalized for flourishing and prosperous economies, for it will no longer be in the free hands of capitalists.
- We must create a strong international authority made up and represented by every single country of the world, where they can sit down on the table, leaving their businesses aside to truly discuss human rights, once more and for sure.
- We cannot afford to keep losing lives everyday and increase the global desperation and anxiety, for it may lead to a fate where powers will fight over available water. If there are any wars and political conflicts around the world, they will not be more important than water and its crisis.
- We cannot depend on this country to save the globe for its imperfection cannot surpass human rights anymore, for it is our duty as humans to call for a change for it is our burden to save the human race with Our Sources, with Our Voices, with Our Pens and with Our Spirits.
